Registration for OPP2005 will take place on November 2 from 8 AM to 9 AM.  Breakfast will also be served at that time.  OPP2005 offers three tracks of intensive trainings and presentations as described below.  A detailed agenda is available here.

Each track is covered by a single speaker.  Most sessions will be offered twice, so that you will be able to attend all sessions of interest to you.  There will also be a keynote speech by Steven Feuerstein and a discussion panel with all of the presenters.

Keynote Presentation:

"Software Programmers: Heroines & Heroes of the Twenty-First Century"

It is well past time for programmers to recognize that the role we play in our society goes far beyond our cubicles.  What we do—the code we write, the bugs we don't manage to fix—has an enormous impact on the world, on the daily lives of millions of people.  In other words, we—programmers and DBAs both—are very powerful.  And as Spidey's uncle said, "With great power comes great responsibility."  This presentation explains just how and why our jobs and our work product are vastly more important than you might have been thinking.  We will then explore the ways in which attendees can accept their responsibility and becomes the heroines and heroes of the 21st century.

Track 1: In-depth PL/SQL

Presenter: Steven Feuerstein

PL/SQL is a very mature and robust language, excelling particularly at integration with the underlying Oracle Database.  Oracle has expanded and deepened the functionality of PL/SQL over the years, as well as greatly improved its performance.  Since it is not possible to explore all aspects of PL/SQL in depth in a day's set of presentations, Steven Feuerstein has identified those aspects of PL/SQL which he thinks are most critical to helping you make the most of PL/SQL and be as successful as possible in deploying PL/SQL-based applications. Track 2: Oracle PL/SQL—the View from Redwood Shores

Presenter: Bryn Llewellyn

As PL/SQL Product Manager at Oracle's Headquarters, I strive to keep my understanding of PL/SQL untainted by knowledge of the details of its implementation. Occasionally, though, knowing what's going on under the covers can help.  Sometimes, superstitions arise about the performance of PL/SQL idioms, and the most persuasive way to dispel these is to interpret the results of a timing experiment using knowledge of the internals.  In preparing my first talk, I relied very heavily on such expert interpretation by my colleagues in the PL/SQL Development Team at Redwood Shores.  Details

Track 3: Developing Multimedia Applications for the Internet

Presenter: Marcel Kratochvil

Developing web based programs can be a challenging task.  Hurdles such as security, handling multimedia, scalability and flexibility need to be addressed.  By using PL/SQL running on Oracle 10g, these issues can be overcomeif the database and PL/SQL features are used correctly.  Working from the dual perspectives of both DBA and developer, and using experiences gained after six years of development of Piction (an internet based digital image delivery system), Marcel will use live code as a foundation to focus on the three key areas of web development: web based interfaces, multimedia and internet security. Track 4: Toad® for Oracle—Quest Software

Toad® for Oracle is an industry-leading, proven database development and administration tool that increases user productivity and application code quality while providing an interactive community to support the user experience.  Whether you are a beginning Toad user or a master, you'll get the latest tips, techniques and trends to help you work more efficiently. 21st Century PL/SQL

We will conclude the OPP2005 with a general session that looks into the future of PL/SQL. Over the past year, we have collected ideas from PL/SQL developers around the world about changes they would like to see in PL/SQL. We will offer these ideas to Bryn Llewellyn and talk with him about the future direction of PL/SQL.
